I need another weekend already. I’ve been to two memorial services in three weeks. Yesterday’s service was very sweet and moving. One of the choir members sang one of my favorite pieces. While his performance wasn’t flawless, I do think the song was a great fit for the man remembered.

As you know, I went to England in January. I’m planning on visiting K in New Mexico during her Spring Break (first week of April) and am also pondering a trip to California to visit Michele and Phil’s new digs there for her 30th in December. I have never travelled so much in one year.

But this is my thirtieth year (I’m still 29 right now!), so I think it’s a worthy time to go places. I have the vacation days, and I might as well use them.

I have more of my Brighton beach photos up on flickr now . . . I still have a few more to upload.

I still have more photos to upload from my last full day in Brighton (which I spent on the beach with Michele’s hubby Phil snapping photos of wood that had washed on shore from a Norwegian freighter), but most of the pics from my England trip are now on flickr.

I’ll have to do another post to list all that I did while there, but you get some idea from my pictures.

Sneak Preview of “Golden Compass”

Okay, is it really a sneak preview if about 6 theatres in town are showing it? Saturday night Mom, Dad, Leah and I went to the sneak preview of The Golden Compass at the Alamo Village. Luckily we arrived an hour before the show started. . . there was already a sizeable line. I didn’t realize that it had sold out.

The special effects in the film are pretty amazing, and the acting is great (especially by Nicole Kidman). It seemed to me that the action was out-of-order from what I remember in the book. And Leah complained because the end of the movie is about 3/4 of the way into the book.

What boggled my mind was that one of the trailers for the film I saw showed two main characters kissing in the North. This action takes place at the end of the book, but didn’t appear in the movie at all. Also, the trailer showed Lyra falling out of the airship. This didn’t appear in the end film either. Wha’ happened? Did the test audiences not approve?

Even with the faux hopeful ending, I liked the overall film, and wouldn’t mind seeing it again.

Can’t wait to see this

I’m not sure when Persepolis is coming to Austin . . . it may not be until January! It looks awesome. The art in the graphic novels was so gorgeous, and the art in this trailer is even more magnificent.

Documentary night!

C and I have planned to see For the Bible Tells Me So tonight; it’s showing for a limited time at the Dobie. My pastor sent out a church-wide email last Friday encouraging us all to see it, otherwise I don’t know that I would have heard about the film while it was still in theatres.

We’re heading out to Mo Ranch this evening. Looks like this will be a great weekend, weatherwise. I’ve been looking forward to the retreat for a while now, although I will miss my internets and phone communication. Not too much, just a little. I try not to be on the internet much on the weekends anyway, except to check email.

I’m sure I’ll have more pics to upload when I get back . . .

More popular than I knew.

3,177 people have viewed one of my photos on flickr. Apparently it’s a hit with atheists and fundamentalist Christians alike. Who knew?!?

This just goes to show that I should definitely check my “popular” shots at flickr more often.

The only thing that worries me is that my name isn’t credited on the site that shows my photo, and attribution is part of the CC license. At least it links to my photo, I guess.

From the Kim Richey concert

Kim, no flash, originally uploaded by evso.

I’m so glad I went to hear her live. I’m always afraid that I won’t like someone in concert as much as I like their recorded sound. But Kim was so entertaining, and her sound as pure as ever. I think I like her even more now, if that’s possible.

Austin was her last stop on her US tour – next she’s on to Europe with John Hiatt.

Blue bandanna

Leah found this picture of me from my last year as a camper, taken by a former counselor. The gal spooning food into her mouth in the front is Helen. I’m the one with the dangly earrings and the bandanna, mid-discussion with someone. I barely recognized myself, I admit.
